What Causes Beautiful Sunsets?

There’s an old saying, “Red sky at night, sailor’s delight.” We have particularly colrful sunsets in south Louisiana. Why is that? The answer is actually quite simple. Midday sunlight appears white or yellow. White light actually contains all the colors of the vivible spectrum. Different colors of light have different wavelengths. As evening falls, some colors are filtered out because of their shorter wavelength, relative to others. That causes the bright shades of red and orange that make up our sunsets. Smoke or clouds further filter the various colors, thus enhancing the effect. When evening approaches, have that camera ready!
