Tipitina’s Music Co-Op is hosting a new series that will educate local musicians on creating and maintaining viable businesses in the music industry with help from the Louisiana Economic Development Small and Emerging Business Development Program and The Recording Academy, called “Making Business of Your Band” Music Business Development Series. The program targets Louisiana residents who currently use music and/or media as a form of income, but have not yet taken steps to establish their business, or are in the early stages of business development.
Participants in the series will examine the various ways working musicians can maximize revenue to develop a sustainable business, including copyright fundamentals, tax credit opportunities, and small business accounting tools. They will also focus on developing business plans as they relate to a music-based business, as well as build a personalized marketing plan.
After the workshops, co-op managers and industry professionals will provide individualized follow-up sessions that will focus on the creation and implementation of a business plan, registering business filings with the State, registering/filing copyrights, creating custom band agreements and more.
The ideal participant for this program is an individual, or band, who is looking to take their music career to the next level of professionalism. Participants should currently be rehearsing, playing paying gigs, writing music and building a catalogue. Participants will be guided through the action steps necessary for them to channel their creative energy and become active members of Louisiana’s creative economy.
Classes will be held on Wednesdays July 1, 15 and 29, and begin at 6 p.m. at Tipitina’s Music Office Co-Op, located at 203 Jefferson St., in Downtown Lafayette.
