After 141 Years Opelousas Hardware Store is Closing Their Doors

Posted by dylanguillory on August 9, 2019 in Featured

This business has become an icon in St.Landry Parish and Opelousas and now it will become another name on the list of businesses closing in 2019 as a sign of the times and a changing buying public.  J.B. Sandoz opened a small hardware store in 1878 and continued to serve the area with dependable service while providing a place where locals could find that one of a kind item. You know the item you could not find anywhere else.  And if J.B. Sandoz did not have what you were looking for, they’d find it for you. It’s hard to find this type of customer service and dedication from customer service today. It was announced this week J.B. Sandoz will close their doors according to KATC TV 3. They will start their going out of business sale Monday.

This was a store that served generations of families in the area and carried everything. Pots, pans, silverware and of course hardware,  just about everything you could imagine from plumming supplies to nails, hammers and building supplies.

With the convenience of online sales, the cash register has been ringing less and less at J.B. Sandoz. The disappointing fact is when this business and other family-owned businesses shut their doors in these communities we lose more than a family-owned business.  The businesses have long been the cornerstones of commerce in these towns. Before online shopping, it was businesses like J.B. Sandoz where families shopped for the supplies they needed while also provided jobs in the area which help boost the local economy. It was the small family-owned businesses which also help local schools and school activities such as the local football and sports programs. We lose so much when these stores close their doors. It’s a sad sign of the times.
