Weezer has a new album coming out, and they know you need a distraction… so they’ve made a video game for you to play while you wait!
Weezer has always had a flair for nostalgia. If you don’t believe me, listen to the Teal Album. Most bands cover a song, and it gets tacked on to an album or EP… Weezer created a nostalgia sensation when they chose to cover Toto’s “Africa” in response to a fan plea. So something like this makes a whole lot of sense.
Right now there is a website where you can play an 8-bit Weezer themed video game. Last fall, Weezer released a song off their upcoming album Van Weezer titled “The End of the Game” to which this online game is tied to. It’s appropriately titled “The End of the Game” Game, and you can play it by clicking here. You start off on the title screen where you must select a player, choosing one of the band members as your character. The gameplay is pretty basic, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move (up is jump) and click your mouse to shoot!
In a statement made by the game’s designer Jason Oda, it’s an “ode to the boss levels that are notoriously impossible to beat”, which will sound very familiar to those who have played old school Nintendo and SNES games back in the day. On a side note, this kind of reminds me of the Kiss pinball machines I’ve heard about. I’ve never actually seen one in person but they were around in the 80s. I think it’s kinda cool to have a game based around a musician or band. There was even a Michael Jackson game called “Michael Jackson’s Moonwalker”, so this isn’t exactly a new concept, but I don’t see it done very often.
In other Weezer news, their new album Van Weezer is due out this Friday (5/15/20), and has been described as being more riff-heavy than the Blue Album, with heavier guitar, and reportedly pays homage to Van Halen sonically. If the new singles they’ve released are any indication, I’d say we’re in for a classic-rock sounding Weezer album. Sounds great to me! Check out their new singles below!
