Top Five Fridays: Bob Marley

Posted by clintdomingue on February 9, 2018 in Featured

Welcome everyone to another edition of Top Five Fridays! This week we look at the late, great Bob Marley. Earlier in the week, I saw that Fox Animation and the Universal Music Group are partnering up to work on a film using songs by Bob Marley. That got me thinking of my favorite songs from the reggae icon.

Without further ado, let’s get the countdown underway!

5. Could You Be Loved?

Full disclosure: I had an incredibly hard time picking between this and Redemption Song. Could You Be Loved won out by a slim margin after some listening to both back-to-back. Redemption Song was one of the first Bob Marley songs I had ever heard and it was for an assignment way back when I was in Community College. That alone was one of the reasons why I almost put it on the list and if I had honorable mentions, this would be there.

I can remember listening to Could You Be Loved on the way back from the gym one morning and that put me in a really good mindset the rest of the day. That might be why it edged out Redemption Song ever so slightly.

4. One Love

I can remember having this in heavy rotation not long during the summer of 2015. After some of the things that happened during that timeframe, it felt appropriate to have that playing on a regular basis.

I mentioned this back when I posted the first ever Top Five Fridays that music has a way of healing the soul and hearing a song with a simple message about one love is a great thing and can really take your mind off of the negativity around the world.

3. No Woman, No Cry

This was the song that put Bob Marley and the Wailers on the map. Simply put, it’s a beautiful song that is about reassuring your loved one that everything will be alright even if things look their absolute worst.

It might be higher in some other people’s lists, but I took some points off since it was covered by Wyclef Jean and I heard that version first. It took a while for me to get over that version because of the fact that I felt that Wyclef ruined the vibe of the song.

2. Jammin’

When people think of reggae, this might be the first thing people think of. You can just picture yourself walking around the beaches of Jamaica (or any beach really) and enjoying the beautiful day however you prefer to do it.

How can you not love a song that’s full of good vibes and is about celebration? It’s the perfect song to relax to.

1. Is This Love?

What can I say about this song? It’s possibly the greatest love song ever written. The first time I ever heard this song, I was truly sold on Marley being one of the greatest artists of all time.

Also, you will have a newfound appreciation for him when you hear the song acapella.
