Top Five Fridays: Women Who Rock!

Posted by clintdomingue on March 9, 2018 in Featured

Welcome everyone to the latest edition of Top Five Fridays! With it being Women’s History Month, it seems pretty appropriate to do a top five dedicated to some of my personal favorite songs from a litany of female artists. However, I’ve added an extra challenge on this and decided to limit myself to artists from the last six years because I think the top five would be filled with Stevie Nicks, Heart, Joan Jett, and others if I didn’t limit it.

I’ve loved these artists, but I want to one day do an individual top five on them one day. Also, there are a lot of great female artists that are simply killing the game right now that deserve their respect. Without further ado, let’s get to the countdown!

5. Marian Hill – Down

Yes, that song from the AirPods commercial. It’s so darn catchy and she’s got such a tremendous voice. I can openly say that I have listened to this so much, once the beat drops, I love every second of it.

I’ve never been a huge fan of EDM, but this song is one of the tracks that I keep going back to simply because it’s infectious. At the end of the day, you need a song like this to get you up and moving.

4. Julien Baker – Something

When you think of your time at college, did you ever think about making an entire album? Well, Julian Baker did just that while at Middle Tennessee and recorded the EP in a studio on campus. Considering how much has changed with how music can be produced in the last ten years thanks to programs like Garage Band, it’s pretty awesome that she was able to pull this off.

It’s a somber song about an unrequited love and how she’s not acting upon it. Just check out Sprained Ankle and enjoy some solid music from one of the future stars in the indie genre.

3. Bishop Briggs – River

This song blew up in a hurry and after a few listens, I was one of those that was hooked. She’s only 25 years old and can sing extremely well and seems poised to have a big career. This song really works well for a number of reasons, especially when you’re working out and nearing that breaking point.

When the bass is pumping in the chorus, you really begin to understand what this song is all about and that’s breaking through those limits.

2. HAIM – The Wire

This has to be a song that I have to listen to every now and again to get me in the right mood. The group consisting of three sisters did a great job laying down this track after a lot of experimentation.

After this song caught fire, it wound up getting the internet meme treatment, being set to the open for the critically acclaimed HBO series The Wire. Considering how dark the show is, it makes me laugh seeing these two being used in such a contrast is amazing.

1. Jessie Ware – Sweet Talk

One day after I got off of work, I stumbled upon Jessie Ware who at first listen seems like a newer Sade. Her sultry voice over a strong instrumental was more than enough to hook me in and check out her album Devotion, which also has some great tracks including If You’re Never Gonna Move (even though there were some alterations to the track before being released on the album).

This was one of my favorite songs from 2012 and deserves a lot more love because of its catchy beat and fantastic vocals.
