Acadiana Mom Grows Her Plants Without Dirt: Cajun Acres Greenhouse

Camille Schuneman is not your average farmer.

First, she is a wife and mother of two young boys. She tends to her farm while her kids are at school. Schuneman’s farm is a little different. She does not use a tractor or shovel to haul dirt. You won’t see her in overalls and rubber boots. Her crop is grown inside a greenhouse in her back yard. And this greenhouse does not use dirt at all. That’s right. There is no soil involved when she grows her crop of lettuce, kale, and arugula. (Just to name a few…she grows a wide variety of lettuces and herbs.)

Her farm is called, The Cajun Acres Greenhouse. It is a hydroponic greenhouse. Her method of using only water and nutrients produces a big and bright crunchy head of lettuce that’s bursting with flavor.

Schuneman and her husband built the greenhouse back in September. Since then, her small home business has been thriving. She spends her days nurturing her plants and then delivering her highly nutritious lettuce to restaurants, friends, family and anyone who messages her on her Facebook page.

Although it is a fairly new business venture for her and her husband, she is quite familiar with the art of gardening. She grew up in Covington. Both of her parents are horticulturists so most of her childhood was spent around plants and gardens. Her parents still use the traditional method of growing plants with dirt but whenever they pay her a visit, they make sure to load up and take home some her water-grown lettuce.
