Folks in Louisiana will fry almost anything. Deep-fried turkey is a hugely popular holiday treat. If you’re not careful, trying to fry a turkey can lead to disaster. Hundreds of fires happen every year when people make improper attempts at frying a turkey. Serous injuries can result. A few years ago, I visited some friends soon after the holiday and there was a large patch of burned grass in their backyard. They had attempted to fry a frozen turkey. My friend escaped injury. Many people don’t.
Here are some tips for safely frying your holiday turkey.
1: DON’T try to fry a frozen turkey. Make sure it’s fully thawed and dry. When water hits the hot oil, it will bubble over. You’ll have a raging fire on your hands.
2: Keep it at least 10 feet away from the house. If it catches fire in the garage, you may literally burn your house down. Keeps the kids & pets at a safe distance.
3: Place the fryer on flat ground. The oil needs to be level.
4: Monitor the temperature. Remember, everything will be hot. Don’t touch the fryer or lid with bare hands.
5 Have a dry powder fire extinguisher handy.
Follow these steps, and you’ll be enjoying your holiday celebration, instead of a visit from the fire department and/or a trip to the ER.
