It’s become common for people seeking romance to meet online. That, unfortunately, gives an opportunity for scammers. Online romance scams can be devastating, both emotionally and financially.
It works something like this. You’ll be on a social media platform, or dating site when someone reaches out. They’ll invite you to start an online relationship. Sometimes, they represent themselves as serving abroad in the military or living in another region. The scammer will gain your trust, then ask for money. A family member is sick, they just lost their job or some other misfortune.
The FTC says romance scams are the second most profitable scams online. People in the 18 – 29 age group lose an average of $750, and people over 70, $9,000.
Never send money to someone you’ve never met in person. Communicate with family & friends. They may spot something you’re missing. You can use a reverse image search for profile pictures. If the pictures show on other profiles, you have a scammer.
