As if they needed to create a holiday to encourage us to take MORE pictures of ourselves…
Every year, National Selfie Day is celebrated on June 21st. And… what can I say? I LOVE selfies! They are a great way to show the world what you’re about. Whether it’s to show off your new band tee-shirt, or of yourself at a festival livin’ it up… Selfies give a glimpse of who you are and what matters to YOU. Going through my phone I discovered that 99% of my selfies are of me with a wig or costume on… because I love to COSPLAY. See what I mean? It says something about you, without words.
If you look at the picture above, I’ve pulled a few examples of different selfie types… (keep in mind I made this up, these are not technical terms or anything… unless you want them to be!)
- The “cute” selfie. (top left) Use anytime you are trying to appear sweet and innocent. Simply touch your face with one hand, and smile really big.
- The “crazy” selfie. (top center) Use for dramatic effect. Do literally anything weird as you snap your photo… hang upside down for best results.
- The “overly serious” selfie. (top right) Use if you are trying to appear stoic, epic, badass, or lost in thought… These are perfect for cosplay selfies.
- The “silly filter” selfie. (bottom left) Dear lord Snapchat has created a monster with these fuzzy animated ears and noses and every kind of animal face you can imagine. Use when you are bored with regular selfies. Some of them even play music!
- The “#nomakeup” selfie. (bottom center) The infamous “no make-up selfie” usually used with a hashtag, is often used when a woman feels confident enough to post her face with *gasp* no make-up.
- The “sexy” selfie. (bottom right) My example is very PG, but these can get very racy. The sexy selfie is very effective if you want attention. It also has the ability to make boys cry. Just put on your best “come hither” face, snap, and send to your sweetheart.
And there you have it, 6 different kinds of selfies… but the possibilities are endless! Ever since the Apple iPhone 4 started offering a front facing camera in 2010, now almost all smartphones have them. Selfies have also changed the way we live in some ways… for example, they’ve replaced celebrity autographs… fans much rather selfies for bragging rights. There are even CLASSES where people can learn how to take better selfies.
Either way, celebrate National Selfie Day by sharing… yourself!
