Don’t Forget To Add Cheese to Your Broccoli and Mites!

Ever sit back and think about what is really in the food your eating. Sometimes it’s best not to know.

Lately, restaurant menus have been including the number of calories in certain dishes and it is quite disturbing. I had no idea that I was eating close to 2000 calories in one meal just by ordering pasta and chocolate cake. I think I was happier (and thicker) when I had no idea.

But what about what else in that dish? According to a new article posted by Buzzfeed, the FDA allows a small of bugs and animal by-product to remain in certain food products. So basically, a small amount of hair is safe to eat but when the hairball is large enough for a consumer to notice, the product is then considered unsafe. (Yea, unsafe for mental well-being.)

According to this article, frozen broccoli can contain some mites, cinnamon may contain rodent hairs and expect to raisins to contain a bit of sand. Out of sight, out of mind, right? I guess eating bugs isn’t so bad as long as it’s cooked. Although I am pretty I have eaten a raw gnat on more than one occasion while jogging down Camellia Blvd.

But if you are interested in knowing what’s in your ginger check out the full list here:

If you are interested to learn more about the food you eat and how to eat healthier, there is a presentation coming up in Lafayette. The presentation, “Love Your Gut,” will take place at ULL Dupre library on Saturday, March 16 at 12:30 pm. The event will showcase two eateries in Lafayette that focus on healthy living. Tribe Collective is a plant-based bakery and Emerge is a raw food cafe and juice bar. Just show up and see what you can discover about the food you could be eating.
