The coroner in St. Tammany Parish is warning of a new/ old drug appearing in the Bayou state. Dr. Charles Preston says Netazines are anywhere from 2 to 100 times more potent than Fentanyl and up to 1,000 times as powerful as morphine. They were developed as pain relievers in the ’50s, but never received FDA approval. There have been recent overdoses in Ascencion, St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes. It can take up to 4 doses of Narcan to revive an overdose victim. Dr. Preston says anything can easily be laced with Netazines, and they can be pressed into pills that look like legitimate prescription medication. The ingredients are easily obtainable, further complicating the issue.
