Robocalls are, at best, annoying. At worst they’re literally downright criminal. Thanks to a new ruling by the Federal Communications Commission, robocalls gnerated by AI, or containing AI generated content are now illegal. Individuals now have the right to sue those who employ the technology in attempts to extort or commit fraud. State attorneys general are now enpowered to crack down on scammers who use AI.
FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel issued a press release saying “Bad actors are using AI-generated voices in unsolicited robocalls to extort vulnerable family members, imitate celebrities, and misinform voters. We’re putting the fraudsters behind these robocalls on notice.”
