I Quit! – Here’s Where People Quit Jobs Most Often

To stay or not stay. That is a question that is faced from time to time when working in any job. Should you quit?

There are lots of reasons people leave a job. It is a big decision. This is the place that pays you money every couple of weeks so you can have a roof over your head, buy new clothes, and fly to Hawaii for vacation. (Just kidding – who actually goes to Hawaii for vacation!)

Sometimes life happens and you have to move to a different town or you need a higher salary or the environment is just not conducive to your personal happiness. Whatever the reason, it happens, people quit. Employees give their notice and drive off into the sunset of uncertainty.

Interestingly enough, according to a study, some states have more quitters than others. This data was compiled by Zippia using quit rates from August 2019. The study discovered that the states with a high quit rate also had a higher number of people who quit in a big way. It is described as a BLS which means “employees who left voluntarily with the exception of retirements or transfers.”

A BLS is referring to a person who has either departed on ‘good terms’ leaving with a 2-week notice, rage-quits, or just stops showing up, (the ghost-quitter). It should also be noted that states with a high-quit rate also have strong healthy job markets. If a person is confident enough to just up and quit a job with no backup plan, it means there are other jobs available to fall back on.

Here are the states with the most quitters:

  1. Alaska
  2. North Carolina
  3. Arizona
  4. Louisiana
  5. West Virginia
  6. Wyoming
  7. Delaware
  8. Indiana
  9. Montana
  10. New Mexico

Here are the top types of jobs that people quit the most:

  1. Accommodation and food service
  2. Leisure and hospitality
  3. Retail trade
  4. Arts, entertainment and recreation
  5. Professional and business services
  6. Total Private
  7. Trade, transportation, and utilities
  8. Real Estate and rental and leasing
  9. Other services
  10. Mining and logging

Here are the states with the lowest quit rate:

  1. New York
  2. New Jersey
  3. Connecticut
