Louisiana Chapter Hosts JDRF One Walk
WHAT: Four hundred people are expected to participate in JDRF One Walk™ (formerly Walk to Cure Diabetes). The event is JDRF Louisiana Chapter’s annual Walk, and is one of more than 200 community JDRF Walks nationwide that bring together hundreds of thousands of people each year who share JDRF’s vision to create a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). The event has set a fundraising goal of more than $40,000, which will help fund critically needed T1D research.
WHEN: Saturday, October 24, 2015
WHERE: Sugar Mill Pond, Youngsville, LA
WHO: Local businesses, families, schools, and other organizations, along with children and adults who have T1D and their families and supporters.
WHY: T1D is an autoimmune disease that impacts millions of people around the world. Each year, 15,000 children and 15,000 adults are diagnosed with T1D in the United States. T1D is unrelated to diet or lifestyle; it occurs when the body’s immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. T1D requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin, and there is no cure.
Interviews are available with adults and children who have T1D, as well as with JDRF volunteers and staff, who can speak about the realities of living with this disease and the promising new research toward turning Type One into Type None.
