Spoilers!! Spoilers!! Spoilers!! Spoilers!! Spoilers!! Spoilers!!
BTW, this review is for season 8 episodes, so…Spoilers!!
After nearly 2 years, Game of Thrones has returned for it’s 8 episode, 8th season.
The first episode aired Sunday night and was titled, Winterfell. The theme song is the same, the ever awesome song that it is, they’d better not change it, but the video during the theme song has gotten an upgrade for their final season. It’s still the same map, focusing in on locations the episode will visit. But the building of the structures is much more detailed than before and you go much further inside the building than before. It gives it a very underground feeling, it seemed very Minecraft-y to me.
The episode had a lot of reunions that the show had been holding off, in some cases several years. Arya and Jon Snow (Aegon Targaryen) hadn’t seen eachother since season 1, Arya was practically a baby back then.
Arya also meets up with the Hound, and Gendry. The latter reunion was a little strange, like Arya was trying to keep up her new “silent Killer” persona, and finally she drops it and smiles with him. She also hands him plans for a weapon she wants him to make, I’m excited to see what she’s come up with. My friend thinks they’re gonna have a relationship, I wouldn’t hate that, but seems unlikely to me.
We had seen Jon interact with the dragons before, but not in this way. I can’t believe we got to see Aegon freakin Targaryen ride a freakin dragon. I mean, we’ve talked about it for a few years, but I never thought we’d get to see it like that.
We found out Yara is alive, which is cool. Theon makes some good moves now and then, thankfully, he stepped up for her. Though I really don’t know why Euron kept her alive. I know he claimed someone to talk to, but that seems very unlikely, but so does him keeping her alive, so…eh.
Speaking of Euron, he finally got what he wanted from Cersei, I wonder how much longer he’ll stay loyal.
And then there’s Cersei, I haven’t understood her since Tommen died. And I haven’t believed she was pregnant since the show started implying that she believes she is back in late season 7. I could be wrong. I just think she’s more likely to be going through “the change” than to have another baby. I read an article where the author doubted as well, he gave a reason that the witch had told Cersei a few seasons back that she would have 3 children, gold will be their crowns, and their shrouds. We already know that’s not true because Cersei told us she had a Baratheon baby stillborn, so I don’t think the witches prophesy will give us the answer. But Cersei’s whole reason for doing anything lately is to continue her “legacy”, and I just think her “legacy” is more of a fallacy.
So Jon found out he’s Aegon Targaryen from Sam Tarly, unfortunately, right after Daenerys told Sam she’d kind of put his father and brother to death. Although Sam wasn’t a big fan of his father, I think he took the loss of his brother really hard. So when he tells Jon who he is, he encourages him to take his place as King and to question whether Dany should rule. Just after the magical dragon ride and the falling in love and stuff that they’re doing. And with Sansa not taking well to Dany too, this is not great timing for junk to be falling apart.
The White Walkers are beyond the wall and now beyond the Last Harth, and they’ve left the Umbers as a creepy message for anyone traveling south from the wall.
And I have to mention, though we don’t get to see them interact yet, Bran tells Sam he’s outside waiting for “an old friend”, and then later in the episode Jaime Lannister finally approaches Winterfell, and then locks eyes with Bran. Oh man, I’m so glad this show is back.
I feel like this episode had too many good feels. Almost anytime someone on this show is happy or content or nearing comfortable, stuff is about to go down. How many of our friends are you going to claim in the final episodes show? Only time will tell. Watch for more reviews as the season goes on, and we’ll cope with whatever happens, together.
Here’s the trailer for episode 2:
