Duuuuuuuuude. Heck yes, y’all probably know, I love Arya, she’s so badass, even when you don’t underestimate her, which is another huge advantage, she still kicks all the butt. We’ll put a pin in that, there’s a lot to get to.
So this episode was pretty great, but it’s not without it’s issues. The decision to send the Dothraki in without firing the trebuchets, catapults or anything, cool flaming swords or not, it seems unwise.
Arya telling Sansa to get below, giving her the dragonglass blade and telling her to stick them with the pointing end was a great moment.
Another great moment was Milisandre lighting the trenches. I thought for a moment she would lose it, but she hung in there and got it done. Attribute it to her love of burning things, I think. My buddy Jeff made a joke that if there would have been a young girl with a love of reading on the stakes, she’d have caught it the first time. I replied “sick burn, dude”.
Sansa and Tyrion in the crypt was a good conversation, she told him he was her best husband. And Sansa has to go and bring up how Tyrion would have divided loyalties, as if she’s determined to stay opposed to Dany. Thankfully, Missande is there to remind them that without Dany, they’d be dead, and loyalties wouldn’t matter.
Seeing Ser Brianne and Ser Jamie fighting back to back is satisfying, but nothing beats seeing Arya with her designed weapon getting after a flock of ice zombies.
Yet another absolutely epic moment, the fiercest of bear cubs, Lyanna Mormont, going out like a straight up G, taking out a giant wight. Just…so…good.
The references back to the first season make me so happy. When Milisandre asks Arya, “What do we say to the god of death?” I was in my room shouting, “NOT TODAY!!”
Jon shows us again he knows nothing by chasing after the Night King. I love the way this episode played out and even mentioned while watching how cool it would be to play this as a video game.
The stuff down in the crypts was too predictable, silly people, they raise the dead, hanging out where they keep the dead folks is pas bon y’all. They’re very lucky they didn’t lose more people down there.
Theon got to complete his redemption story and go out with honor. And Ser Friendzone, Jorah gets to go out protecting his Khalessi.
I love the music going throughout these final scenes.
And then there’s that scene, Bran stares at the Night King, the Night King stares back. Bran looks confident, Night King looks confused. He reaches back to get his sword, there’s a brush of wind past one of Craster’s boys, and there comes Arya, flying through the air, Vylarian steel dagger drawn. For a moment, when he the Night King grabs her by the neck, you think she might be dead, but then she shows her badassery once again, dropping the dagger to her other hand and plunging it into him, thus ending the Great War.
So what are we left with? Jon (Aegon), Dany (with 2 dragons), Tyrion, Sansa, Arya, Gendry, Grey Worm, Missande, Varys, Bran (Three Eyed Raven), Jamie, Brianne, Podrick, Tormund, Sam, Gilly (and Little Same), Yara (kind of), Meera (maybe), Nymeria (possibly), Cersei, Euron, The Zombie Mountain and Qyburn.
We know Jon can burn, saving Lord Commander Mormont he burned his hand. We know Dany can’t burn with regular fire, but what about Wildfire? And Cersei is probably still on Arya’s list, she may get to scratch another name off.
Oh yeah, and apparently, there were celebrities walking among the dead.
