NSFW Warning and some slight spoilers
This Sunday will begin the 8th and final season of the HBO series Game of Thrones. Nearly 8 years to the day of the 8th anniversary of season 1’s first air.
The epic fantasy novel series that inspired the show, ‘A Song of Ice & Fire’ by George R.R. Martin, has yet to be complete, but the show will finally be ending its 8 year run in just 8 short weeks.
The story has everything; dragons, sex, magic, ice zombies, castrations, incest, murder, war, love, birth, betrayal, redemption, whores, bears, wolves…I mean, there’s so much going on in this story.
The theme song is iconic and though instrumental, it’s had several lyrics applied to it over the years. The most “appropriate” came from a teenage actress from the show, Maisie Williams who plays Arya Stark. Her lyrics were simple, but accurate. The lyrics she said to the repetitive instrumental are, ” Death & Boobies, Death & Boobies…”. The best summary I can think of really, and done to the theme song nonetheless.
The fictional world Martin has created is extremely rich in cultures, language, customs, fashion, food. And most of the characters are somehow wrangled into this struggle for the Iron Throne of one of the continents called Westeros.
Watchers have a ride range of favorite characters to choose from, men and women can be heroes or villains just as easily. There are role models from nearly every walk of life, and a ridiculous amount of people claiming to be King or Queen or declaring other people to be King or Queen, to later in the series, people being actually No One, to Three Eyed Ravens, and so on…
And be careful picking a favorite character, GRRM seems to relish in seeing his fans miserable. The best way I can describe how often to expect death in GoT is by quoting a main character, Cersei Lannister, who at the time is the Queen Mother, “When you play the game of thrones, you win, or you die.” It’s so appropriate, and if you remember it, you might be ok when watching the show. If you forget, GRRM may claim your favorite character, and you can only try and not be too upset when it happens.
Through the years, the show has made me laugh tons, cry too much, stress for characters I never thought I’d care about, and even, question my morals.
It’s been an historical television phenomenon and I’m so glad to get to watch and discuss with great friends.
I could type for days and not do justice to 7 years of a show, but you don’t want to read all that. If it strikes your fancy at all, check it out, if it doesn’t seem like your thing, you’re probably right, but the rest of us will not shut up for at least another 8 weeks.
