Brother Dege reached out recently and has presented me with a new song from his ever expanding Psyouthern Media label. This new song tells the tale of a man known as “Shazzerine” written and performed by the one and only Chris “Shazzerine” DeShazo. Check out the music video for it below… I’m telling you it’s quite catchy because I have found my self singing and humming the tune for the last few days.
According to the press release… Born & raised in southern Louisiana, Shazzerine was one of the founding members of cult, garage rock heroes Frigg-A-Go-Go who rocked and pillaged 1994-2006 before the garage rock gold rush of the ’00s crashed in heap of foreclosed bad dreams and androgynous neckties. (And if you were lucky enough like me to be alive in those days and see those cats play then good for you… they put on some great shows right?! ) Following Frigg’s rise and fall, Shazzerine disappeared into the American wasteland, working odd jobs, slumming in new metaphysical heights, romancing women, and wandering the USA in a failed quest to discover the meaning of anti-life. He eventually returned to his hometown of Lafayette Louisiana, kindly spreading his deep knowledge of life and cautioning the youngsters to avoid adult responsibilities for as long as possible so as to dodge the ravages of cancer, heart disease, and irrelevancy. After brief stints in several Louisiana bands (Lost Bayou Ramblers, Freetown Hounds, Brother Dege), Shazzerine focused his attention on his own songwriting and emerged from the funhouse of his own mind with the autobiographical manifesto single “Shazzerine,” herein presented to you in the form of a one-off, collectible, jam & go digital single. “Money and things don’t mean nothing to Shazzerine.” It’s a motto, a way of life, a will to powerlessness, but above all, it’s a little rock & roll gem from the rickety, clapboard outlands of southern Louisiana.
It’s a fun song and I do hope that DeShazo continues to pursue his solo career. I look forward to more stories and words of wisdom from the man known as “Shazzerine”.
