If you listen to 1063RL, chances are, you’re a fan of Akron blues/rockers, The Black Keys. They formed in 2001 and have put out 8 studio albums since 2002. Their last album, Turn Blue was released back in 2014, and although we’ve got music from solo acts and other bands of both Patrick Carney and Dan Auerbach, we’ve had nothing from The Black Keys since then. Until last Thursday, when out of seemingly nowhere, The Black Keys posted a new video on their Youtube channel.
The new track is called Lo/Hi and the guitar riffs have me mesmerized all over again. The Black Keys have some great videos (Lonely Boy is just the Security guard from where they were supposed to shoot the video dancing to the song, but is still so great), I don’t count the Lo/Hi video among them, but maybe there will be a cinematic video out soon. The video opens with a nod to the boys hometown, Akron, Ohio, and the rest is a still shot graphic with Lo/Hi.
The song feels like something off their El Camino album, the deep amp-y sounds of the guitar take me back to the road trips spent listening to that album non-stop. It’s kind of lively considering the lyrics:
Nobody to love you
Nobody to care
If you got nobody to hug you
No one to answer your prayer
It’s slightly haunting, slightly lively and full on awesome.
There’s no word on whether the song will be attached to a larger project, like a new album, or if it’s just a one-off. What we do know is The Black Keys are on the leaked line-up for Woodstock 50 and if they were putting out a new album, it would be a great time for it.
