The Winter of Death continues, although this is probably the least surprising demise so far: ABE VIGODA passed away yesterday morning at the age of 94. He died in his sleep at his daughter’s home in New Jersey. She says he died of old age, adding, quote, “This man was never sick.” Abe was best known for playing Detective Fish on the police station comedy “Barney Miller” in the ’70s. He was on the show from 1974 to 1977, when his character “retired” so he could do a spin-off called “Fish” . . . which only lasted two seasons. Fish made his final appearance on “Barney Miller” in 1981. The show went off the air in ’82. Abe was also in “The Godfather”, where he played Sal Tessio . . . a mobster who gets WHACKED after he turns on AL PACINO’s Michael Corleone. If Abe had a trademark, it’s that he sorta seemed like he was ALWAYS an old man. And Snickers had fun with that by putting him in a Super Bowl commercial with BETTY WHITE six years ago. He was also famous for DYING. He’s been the subject of death rumors and hoaxes going back more than 30 years.
Lafayette’s Antenna TV will have an Abe Vigoda/Barney Miller Marathon this Saturday from 3-9pm. Six hours of Barney Miller. Antenna TV can be found over-the-air on our own 32.2 .
