Bleachers is an American indie pop act based in New York City, and the official stage name of songwriter/producer Jack Antonoff, who is also part of the band Fun.
Antonoff founded the project while he was touring in support of Fun’s Grammy-nominated 2012 album, Some Nights. His solo project has very distinct ’80s influences.
Bleachers’ debut single, “I Wanna Get Better,” was released in the spring of 2014 by RCA, with an album the following summer called Strange Desire, featuring appearances by Yoko Ono and Grimes.
Antonoff put together a live band after Strange Desire’s release, and launched a supporting tour. Here’s another track off the debut album, “Rollercoaster.”
In September of 2015, Bleachers released Terrible Thrills, Vol. 2, with new renditions of all the songs from his debut album, but performed by female artists like Carly Rae Jepsen, Elle King, and Tinashe.
Bleachers’ third album Gone Now is due out June 2nd, featuring the catchy 80s throwback-sounding track, featuring backing vocals from Lorde called “Don’t Take the Money” – we’ve been playing it alot on 106.3 Radio Lafayette lately, watch the video below!
According to an interview with Antonoff, “Don’t take the money” is a phrase he says in his head that’s not about actual money. It’s about following a light, or gut feeling. He often repeats the phrase to himself when when he’s trying to stay on track. He also says that specifically in this song it’s about his relationship and “the fight leading to the euphoria of seeing the light with someone else…”
THIS JUST IN! While I was writing this Launch Box entry, Bleachers uploaded a new video to YouTube! It will also be featured on Gone Now – it’s called “I miss Those Days” – enjoy!
