MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER The Things That We Are Made Of (Lambent Light Records/Thirty Tigers) The singer-songwriter worked with 2016 Producer of the Year Grammy-nominee Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Chris Stapleton) and recorded in Nashville, TN, her 14th full-length album features eleven new songs. The new album is the follow-up to 2014’s Songs From the Movie, Carpenter’s first orchestral LP, which afforded her the opportunity to perform alongside symphony orchestras throughout the world. Carpenter, who first shot to mainstream country success in the Nineties with a string of hits that included “I Feel Lucky,” “Shut Up and Kiss Me,” and the Grammy-winning cover of Lucinda Williams’ “Passionate Kisses.” “Something Tamed Something Wild” and indeed the entire new album finds the songwriter at her most thoughtful and also at times sweetly whimsical, perfectly capturing the buoyant spirit of her early successes and also serving as a reminder that she remains one of the most grounded, sentient songwriters of her generation — a generation that for the most part regarded the LP as a whole rather than as individual (and disconnected) tracks. LITTLE SCREAM Cult Following (Merge) Little Scream is the stage name of American-born, Montreal-based singer, songwriter, multi-instrumental musician and artist Laurel Sprengelmeyer. Her musical style has been described as a blend of folk, pop and art rock.Cult Following is the second studio album by American-born, Montreal-based indie rock artist Little Scream, to be released and it features many talents like Sufjan Stevens, Aaron & Bryce Dessner of The National, Sharon Van Etten, Arcade Fire violinist Owen Pallett, TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone & Mary Margeret O’Hara. Richard Reed Parry, of the band Arcade Fire, is credited as Little Scream’s creative partner and helped with the music on the album. On the first single of the new album, the song “Love as a Weapon,” Sprengelmeyer says “I was thinking of classic pop songs, how a good one can lift you out of a fog like nothing else.
