The award that UL-Lafayette just received comes from the veterans owned organization Victory Media.
It focuses on things like military support on campus, tuition assistance and spouse and dependent benefits, and UL-Lafayette offers them all.
Whitney Utter who served in the Navy for 7 years and is also a student says, “We provide services to dependents of veterans, actual veterans, National Guard members who are all enrolled here at the University we help them get their benefits,”
The award is based on extensive research and a data-driven survey of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide.
Utter also works in the university’s Office of Veteran Services with its director Sammi Conner.
He says he first reached out to this office while he was deployed thousands of miles away.
“My last year station in Naples about a year out, I started emailing people here, actually in this office, asking questions and they were very helpful in getting me situated,” Utter tells KLFY
There are about 500 military students at UL-Lafayette. Utter believes the support he received at such a critical time was the ultimate salute “For veterans it’s a very difficult time. Making the transition from military to civilian and even student. Even being serviced by this office was an excellent experience and I was actually lucky enough to get hired here,”
He also says they also offer extensive help and resources when it comes to scheduling and flexibility. “We offer early registration rights as veterans, to give us a leg up on those around us,” Utter also added the University also recently started the Student Veterans organization to provide even more support and camaraderie to its military students.
