In life, there are items we need and then we have those items we want. You know the difference between the two are items we need are those items we must have to survive. The things that come to mind are air, water and food. The list containing the ‘wants’ can be just about anything from concert tickets to automobiles. You don’t need any of these items to sustain life although it does make life more convenient.
Food is definitely an item which would fall under the need category. We all need food for life.
When it comes to grocery shopping I’m sure you have a favorite grocer you shop at. If you are like most of us you have one or maybe two places you enjoy to food shop. The reasons my two favorite grocery stores are on my favorite lists are because they are close to my home and I know where everything is located in the store. Nothing worse than quickly running into a store for a gallon of milk and not knowing where the dairy section is located. At that point, the quick milk run has taken longer than I would have liked.
The Daily Meal (TDM) took on the annual task of listing the favorite grocery store in every state. With that said, who do you think would be the favorite grocery store in Louisiana. I’ll get to that answer shortly but first, let’s see the methodology on determining the top grocer in every state.
TDM considered every type of grocer, supermarket and all brick-and-mortar grocers including the small mom and pop locations. Then the criteria included stock, innovation, customer service, cleanliness and the store’s contribution to the community.
The top grocer in Louisiana is Rouses. Are you surprised? Rouses started in Houma in 1960 and since had grown to over 60 locations from Lake Charles to Orange Beach, Alabama. This family-owned business sells more local seafood than any grocer on the Gulf Coast. Rouses is busy during festival season baking and selling more than 500,000 king cakes every season.
I can’t lie because if where I live Rouses is not my favorite grocery store but when I get the chance, I enjoy going into Rouses and getting a hot plate lunch and I can’t leave without purchasing Rouses tasso, andouille, boudin, and smoked sausage. I’ll grab one of their fresh cakes or pies and I’m set!
