If you work at a store, restaurant, or even a coffee shop, you often get to know your regular customers, right?? Sometimes well enough to make jokes… and sometimes NOT!
So, this guy in St Augustine, Florida ordered a coffee at a Starbucks, and he is not happy. 🙁 *super sad-face*
He ordered a grande white mocha with all the fixings, which contains 470 calories when it’s made with 2-percent milk.
It wasn’t what was inside the cup that upset this Starbucks customer, it was what was written on the coffee cup, on the part where you would write the customer’s name.
Instead it said “DIABETES HERE I COME.” (… ehrmagerd… you really wrote that??)
As true as the joke may be, considering there is a butt-load of sugar in those, this hurt the customer on a personal level, who has two sisters who suffer from Type 1 diabetes.
Sure, diabetes isn’t funny – but the barista didn’t mean any harm, or know the circumstances of the customer’s family.
When the store manager was shown pictures of the cup and asked if this was something Starbucks condones, he said the only thing that should be written on the label is the drink type and the name of the customer, and they do not condone that type of behavior.
Starbucks has since then commented on the issue with “We strive to provide an inclusive and positive experience for our customers, and we’re disappointed to learn of this incident. We are working directly with the customer to apologize for his experience, and with our partners (employees) to ensure this does not happen again.”
The customer wrote a note on that same cup and returned it to the baristas in hopes employees won’t judge other people in the future.
The note reads, “2 of my sisters are diabetic, so … not funny.”
The customer said he doesn’t need an apology. Instead, he just wants reassurance that this won’t happen to anyone else.

People are way sesnitive these days… I would have found the joke funny… but I never take things too seriously. But I’m not every customer – so keep that in mind the next time you want to make a funny at work with *gasp* a customer!
