Welcome everyone to another edition of Top Five Fridays! Last week, we took a look back at the year of music in 2017. It seems appropriate to look ahead to this year’s albums that I’m personally looking forward.
Without further ado, let’s look at some albums that you need to be looking forward to in 2018.
5. Vance Joy – Nation of Two (Release Date: February 23rd)
The Australian artist’s sophomore effort has a lot of promise with the single “Lay It On Me” being one of my favorite tracks in the last year.
What makes it interesting to me is that it has been described as “a perfectly self-contained couple; their world beginning and ending at the bed they share, the car they ride in, or any other place where they’re together…The idea that their love for each other gives them their bearings; a point of reference that makes sense of life,” My hope is that this album will be from start to finish a story being told because I love listening to albums like this the way they were intended to.
4. Jack White – Boarding House Reach (Release Date: TBA)
This was recently announced and has a lot of hype around and justifiably so since it’s his first solo album since Lazaretto. While there’s no release date announced, he does have two tracks that he’s released on streaming services and it has a music video as well for the single named “Connected By Love”.
The sound for the album based off the sample size is experimental and if it does in fact come out in 2018, it’s probably going to wind up on my year-end list. Not enough artists are taking risks in my opinion in 2017 and White is doing so with the use of old-school synths and electronic music along with his great vocals.
3. Justin Timberlake – Man of the Woods (Release Date: February 2nd)
Anytime a Justin Timberlake album comes out, I’m already in there like swimwear. He’s grown a lot over the years and you can tell from what I’ve heard off the single “Filthy”. Also, the music video is amazing and needs to be appreciated for the cinematography.
As a person who loved 20/20 and FutureSex/LoveSounds, this seems to be more of the same and I’m all for it.
It’s been a long time since we’ve heard some music from Dashboard Confessional. The new album has a great single in “We Fight” which can get you motivated in a hurry.
If you need a quick refresher course on this group, check out “Screaming Infidelities” and “Vindicated”.
1. MGMT – Little Dark Age (Release Date: TBA)
It’s classic MGMT and I love it. The title track off the new album has shades of The Cure, but still has the signature sound that had me hooked from the outset. If this is what I can expect from the new album, you can mark me down as someone who will buy this album the day it comes out.
