Welcome everyone to another edition of Top Five Fridays! This week, I take a look at the group Muse. I’ve been a fan of the group for a while and am looking forward to their new album and have enjoyed their latest single called “Something Human”.
So with that in mind, I’m going to give you my favorite Muse songs. As always, it’s purely my opinion and if you have a favorite, don’t hesitate to let me know what your favorites are.
5. Uno (Showbiz)
Why not start things off with a track from their debut album. One of the complaints that I have about their early stuff is that a lot of them take a little while to get going. For instance, in this song it takes 28 seconds for the song’s main riff to get underway.
However, it has a more crunchy sound to it once it gets started and for me it has that raw sound that some later albums don’t have. It makes sense though because the amp for the guitar blew up during the recording session for this and some of the other songs on the album. Thankfully for us, the band didn’t spontaneously combust like the amp did.
4. Hysteria (Absolution)
I think a lot of people would consider this album the one that got them propelled into the mainstream when bands like the Strokes and the White Stripes were at their absolute zenith and to me Hysteria may be my favorite track on the album. Yes, “Time Is Running Out” is another great song from the album, but I had to make a tough choice and leave on the outside looking in.
I think it’s because of the fact that the song’s got a lot of energy to it throughout the song. You compare it to some of the other songs on the list and you can tell it has a little more edge to it and it makes sense considering the title of it is Hysteria.
3. Undisclosed Desires (The Resistance)
This was another tough choice to make, but the first three tracks on Resistance are fantastic, but I really prefer this song over the others. After two epic tracks in “Uprising”and “Resistance”, the album has to come back down to earth for a minute and establish some exposition in this album that seems to tell an overarching story.
I mean, Uprising and Resistance seem to fit well together and this is in the aftermath of all that happened in the previous two songs. At least that’s how I think about it even though it’s actually about Matt Bellamy and his girlfriend at the time.
2. Starlight (Black Holes and Revelations)
I’ll admit, I have a soft spot for Black Holes and Revelations and they make up the top two spots. This was the album that I first found out about the group and this song was one that was in heavy rotation back in my community college days.
The guitar in this track sounds so different compared to other songs around this time and it works so well. It’s a beautiful song that Matt Bellamy takes to another level with his vocals.
1. Knights of Cydonia (Black Holes and Revelations)
I mentioned when talking about the first album they made that songs when they take a while to get going, it’s difficult to get into. That’s definitely not the case when this song gets kickstarted. It takes you straight into some kind of sci-fi war between space colonies or something.
Then the guitars come in and it becomes an entirely different song. Yes, I found out about this song through Guitar Hero III but every time I hear the guitar riff at about 3:10, I get goosebumps and could see this be used in a big fight scene during a Marvel film. Or in this remix of the famous fight scene with Kylo Ren and Rey teaming up. Just a phenomenal song in general that gets you amped up.
