Welcome everyone to another edition of Top Five Fridays Saturdays! This was supposed to be out on Friday, but that’s what happens when life gets in the way. That being said, I had a top five in mind for this week and it involves one of my favorite jam bands in the Dave Matthews Band.
Let’s get to the Countdown!
5. Grey Street
When you hear some of this group’s music it sounds like it belongs in a soundtrack of somebody’s life. The last single from Busted Stuff is a prime example, revolving around a woman trying to figure out her place in the world and not be lonely.
What makes this song, along with several others from the group, great is that they can be added upon years later because in live performances there are two more verses that have been added to this song and that’s pretty awesome.
4. The Space Between
This was actually the first song I had ever heard from the group. At first, I wasn’t a fan of the song, more specifically the chorus. Then again, I was like 12 when this song came out so what did I know back then?
However, I’ve grown to appreciate it and it sounds like it belongs in a romantic comedy soundtrack when things reach their crescendo and the two main characters finally embrace.
3. What Would You Say
Fun fact: John Popper was on this song, performing the harmonica solo at the end of the song. The group’s first single is just so upbeat, you can’t help but enjoy the song and tap your feet to it.
When I hear that song, it just gets me up and going and can really get my day off to a really good start. Then again, there’s about 10 or 12 songs just from DMB that do that. Who would’ve thought that a song with a hint of nihilism (Everyone goes in the end) would be so upbeat?
2. So Much to Say
In what seems like a spiritual successor to What Would You Say, So Much to Say is another really fun track with similar elements to it (the intro is kind of similar). The chorus tells you all you need to know and I’ve loved hearing it over the years.
1. Ants Marching
One of my favorite things I did as a kid was when I’d go on long road trips was listen to music and visualize music videos in my head. This is one of those songs that really gets that part of my brain going. It just sounds like the kind of song that you’d have playing as your day gets started. It’s a fun song with some all too real meaning with it being about the monotony of everyday life.
