Lafayette Holi – Acadiana’s Festival of Colors (3/24)

Check out Holi Fest this Saturday (3/25), it’s FREE admission, and takes place at Girard Park starting at 11am – Be prepared to get covered in a rainbow of COLORS!

What is Holi Fest?

“Holi” is a Hindu religious festival, also known as the Festival of Colors. It is mostly celebrated in India, but also in places that have a large Hinduism following.

The timing Holi is very close to Easter, but they’re a little different:

1. For Easter, you color eggs – For Holi you color people!

2. Easter egg hunts are usually for children – Holi is an event for anyone…with an inner child!

3. For Easter, you dress your best – For Holi… you should NOT wear your best, unless you want to cover it in colored powder!

05

It’s probably pretty obvious from the photos – Holi is literally celebrated “WITH” colors. The object is to throw color all over each other! Dry colors, wet colors… colors of colors!

The color they use at the Lafayette Holi Fest celebration is called “Gulal”which is made of corn starch, food coloring, and fragrance – all non-hazardous.

The festival also features Bollywood music and dancing, and while the festival itself is FREE to attend – there will also be Indian food, pizza, beer, and more for purchase while you’re there.

Here is a before and after shot of our friends Charlette, Matt, and their son Lucas, who went to Holi Fest last year:

Here are some Holi Fest Survival Tips:

1. Wear white (colors look best all over white)

2. Wear sunblock

3. Protect your eyes with sunglasses

4. Bring towels for your car so you don’t ruin your seats after

5. Bring wet wipes to clean your hands and face

6. Wear a face mask to keep from getting color in your nose and mouth

You can bet I’ll be out there Saturday, if you see me, throw some purple my way!
