Morgan Reviews – Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley is an HBO series written by Mike Judge, and if you were, at any time, a fan of Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill, Office Space and/or Idiocracy, you should definitely give Silicon Valley a view. But, in all honesty, if you are not a fan of at least one of those shows or movies, you will probably feel similarly about Silicon Valley.

The half-hour show has 4 seasons about 5 friends who are trying to do a tech start-up with their ground-breakingly efficient data-compression system that has several types of applications. But the kicker is that the main developer and CEO Richard Hendrix might be just as awkward as he is brilliant. He’s got great ideas, but he’s like a bundle of nerves and he’s constantly jumping to conclusions before he has all the facts, which leads to a lot of unfortunate situations for their company, Pied Piper. So as Richard and the other members of the company struggle to get over one hurdle, they often create another 3 in the process.

I have an uncle that’s a software developer who is known for his work on the Firefox browser, him and my aunt have lived near Silicon Valley and he commutes in for several years and he has confirmed many well placed inside jokes on the show. Silicon Valley is already hilarious, throughout the series there are moments where my friends and I have to pause the show for minute because we can’t hear the show over our own laughter, I can hardly imagine more jokes that are even funnier!

One of the biggest names in the show, TJ Miller, has been with the show since the beginning, but it was recently announced that Miller would not be returning for S5 due to Silicon Valley’s production schedule conflicting with Miller’s other projects. He was a key character and I can’t say I’m happy to see him go, but the show has a recurring theme behind the motto “embrace the pivot”, I’m willing to give the show a chance to embrace the pivot as Pied Piper has so many times.

TL;DR: Mike Judge & HBO deliver another project that hilariously captures the unique age in which we live.
