Has everyone been enjoying STRANGER THINGS on Netflix?!
I know I have been (I’m only on Episode 4 so… no spoilers ok?!) and if you are digging on all that nostalgia goodness then you might enjoy what some local creators are currently working on. It’s a comic book called, SMUT AND JEFF, that is a heist story set in the 1980s about a teenager trying to steal his very first porno magazine. The project is currently on Kickstarter and it’s from local creator Kody Chamberlain. (writer)
JEFF is a typical teenaged boy spending the last week of summer vacation stressed about high school. It’s a very familiar feeling of being a boy unprepared for the journey into a man’s world. After being mocked and ridiculed, Jeff is determined to find and steal the one item he’s told will transform any boy into a real man: His very first porno magazine.
Now, SMUT AND JEFF is NOT a porn story, it’s a story about scarcity. It’s an homage to the quest for those unattainable treasures of youth before the internet took hold of humanity. A time when search engines were librarians and encyclopedias. Beyond that, and unknown to many, there was a secret underground of information spoken softly in certain areas of the cafeteria and the movie theater parking lot. With enough information, a bold teenager might venture into an unknown neighborhood to purchase a hip hop album the stores wouldn’t dare carry. SMUT AND JEFF is a tribute to those noble quests of the 80s, and the adventurous youth that dared embark on the adventure.
Kody has taken a back seat to doing the art this time and has welcomed newcomer Gavin Guidry, a native of the New Orleans, to handle the art. SMUT AND JEFF will be Gavin’s first professional credit, but as you can see in the sample pages here, he’s got the chops of a seasoned veteran. Local Eisner and Harvey Award-winning artist best known for his work on Image Comics’ CHEW, Rob Guillory, is responsible for all the covers and the fun character designs. Also, professional comic book color artist K. Michael Russell is doing some amazing work with the colors on this book from the preview pages I have seen.
They are planning for this story to be 5 issues, 32 pages each, and all in full color! Click here for more about the story and check out a sweet preview of the project!
