This 3 season HBO series is one of the most confusing shows I’ve ever seen. It’s hard to describe how it’s still watchable despite that fact, but even though the viewer has little clue what’s happening, it’s still an enjoyable show. The cast and the soundtrack are both great, but those factors alone don’t make a good show.
The Leftovers cast has Justin Theroux (American Psycho), Amy Brenneman (Judging Amy), the 9th Doctor Who Christopher Eccleston, Liv Tyler (LoTR) and many other faces along the way. And the soundtrack features Regina Spektor, Hozier, Jim James and the Pixies.
All 3 seasons are confusing, even HBO’s description of the series finale says “Everything is answered, nothing is answered.” I would probably have said, “Very few things are somewhat answered not at all”. In Season 3 they started adding Director’s commentary after the show and even watching that gave me little to no clues as to what was happening. And it’s not one of those mysteries where everything will be answered in the end, just concluded. I wasn’t really disappointed with the finale, just still confused.
This isn’t one of my ringing endorsements for a show, I get that, I’ve said very little that would convince people to want to see it, I understand, but I’ve never had a show that I can’t describe as bad, but can’t think of who I should recommend to see it. Maybe if you just like the idea of not knowing WTF is happening, if being lost down a rabbit hole of cults, 2% of the world population disappearing in one incident, weirdos who can hug the pain away, and trying to live with the aftermath of whatever the hell is going on, this is the show for you.
TL;DR: The Leftovers is 28 hours of stimulating orderly disarray.
