The complete AMC American period drama series, TURN: Washington’s Spies, can be found on Netflix or pay-for-play on several other streaming services. Series often get extra points from me for being finished, it’s nice not having to wait for a new season, so we’ll just get that out of the way.
As a history buff, this was my type of series right from the beginning. The series tells the story of a northern New York farmer, Abraham Woodhull, and his unlikely recruitment and adventure into the fairly new type of warfare, espionage, during the American Revolution.
One of the great parts of the series, it goes beyond the war, it shows the personal toll soldiers and also many civilians had to pay, and on both sides of the war, even some whose loyalties change in its course.
We get a humanizing look into some famous and infamous historical figures. Many of the facts behind the stories were known to me, but there’s something about seeing the human behind the actions that makes it so much more real and you better appreciate the sacrifices that were made to make this country.
And the actors and actresses and wardrobe in this show are phenomenal, and they must have spent some time in the strapping lad with a broad chin department, I didn’t know they still made people that look like this. Seeing the cast in modern attire is unbelievable that it’s the same people.
If you’re a history buff or a fan of good dramatic period pieces, I recommend catching this one.
TL;DR: A dramatic, personal look at the untold stories of espionage during the American Revolution.
