Before Lord Huron was a full band, it was a solo project, started in 2010 by Michigan-born/Los Angeles-based musician Ben Schneider. The band name is a reference to Lake Huron, where Schneider spent a lot as a child. It all began when Schneider recorded three songs, inspired by the time he spent communing with nature. These three songs were “Into the Sun,” “The Problem With Your Daughter” and “We Went Wild” which later were released as an EP. Listen to “We Went Wild” below:
With the quick success of Lord Huron, more members were needed to flesh out the band for live performances. Schneider added members to his lineup and began touring, developing their live show as they went. In the fall of 2010 they released the Mighty EP, along with a video for the “The Stranger.”
In 2011 Lord Huron spent alot of time on the road, appearing at South by Southwest, Lollapalooza, and a few other music festivals. By this time, Schneider had a more permanent lineup, with his childhood friends Mark Barry on drums, Brett Farkas on guitar, Miguel Briseno on bass, and Tom Renaud on guitar.
Lord Huron signed with IAMSOUND Records in January of 2012, and began on their first full-length album, Lonesome Dreams. Check out the video for “Ends of the Earth” which has a cool cut-out style stop-motion video.
In 2014 they started working on a second full-length album, Strange Trails, which had a western theme, which released in early 2015. In my opinion, “The World Ender” from that album is the best song from Lord Huron. It not only has an unforgettable beat and chorus, but also has a very interesting narrative video that feels very Tarantino-esque. Watch the video for “The World Ender” below!
Strange Trails also contains the beautiful track called “The Night We Met” that you’ve been hearing on 106.3 Radio Lafayette. You may have also heard it featured on the Netfilx show 13 Reasons Why. Listen below!
