June 2
1992 – The Lemonheads released their fifth album, It’s a Shame About Ray. It features the title track, “Mrs. Robinson,” “My Drug Buddy,” and “Confetti.”
June 3
1967 – Aretha Franklin went to No. 1 on the U.S. singles chart with her version of the Otis Redding hit “Respect.”
June 4
1975 – The Rolling Stones became the first rock band to receive royalties for sales of their records in Russia (the Soviet Union at that time).
June 5
1995 – Rage Against The Machine went to No. 1 on the U.S. album chart with Evil Empire. The album’s title is taken from the phrase “evil empire”, which was used by former US President Ronald Reagan and many conservatives in describing the former Soviet Union. The album won the 1996 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance.
June 6
1978 – The Cars released their self-titled debut album. It features “Just What I Needed,” “My Best Friend’s Girl,” “Good Times Roll,” “Bye Bye Love,” and “Moving in Stereo.”
June 7
1994 – Stone Temple Pilots released their second studio album, Purple, which went to No. 1 in America and sold over 6 million copies on the strength of the tracks “Big Empty,” “Vasoline” and “Interstate Love Song.”
