The Launch Box featuring White Moth Black Butterfly
If you like: Enigma, Duran Duran, Crosses
White Moth Black Butterfly’s sound borrows influences from Massive Attack, Enigma, and Sigur Ros. It emanates huge cinematic soundscapes, classical, acoustic and electronic music with powerful vocals.
More of a collaboration than a band, White Moth Black Butterfly is the ‘experimental’ creation of award-winning British singer-songwriter Daniel Tompkins (vocalist of TesseracT, Skyharbor, and In Colour) and Indian guitarist/producer Keshav Dhar (from the band Skyharbor). The other members include Jordan Bethany with additional vocals, and Randy Slaugh (keyboard and programming).
Tompkins has established himself as a highly respected vocalist with a dedicated worldwide fan base. Arguably one of the busiest collaborative vocalists, he balances his time between White Moth Black Butterfly, and his other band TesseracT, continuing to create a strong impression within the music industry.
November of 2013 saw the release of White Moth Black Butterfly’s debut album One Thousand Wings, which received critical acclaim. Some of the highlights from the album include “The World Won’t Sleep”, “Omen”, and “Uncertainty”.
Beautiful camera work in the video for “The World Won’t Sleep” – musically, it gets intense around 1:45, watch below!
This eerie video for “Omen” below sends chills down my spine… The sped-up footage of his head moving/twitching around reminds me of something out of a horror movie…
Calm, serene, and cinematic… check out the video for “Certainty” below:
April 2014, they released a single called “Rising Sun” – Check out the official video below:
It’s been a while since that single for “Rising Sun”… rest assured though, there is a new album in the works. I imagine these guys stay pretty busy with so many other projects – Dan Tompkins (vocalist) is currently in several other bands, one of which I saw live in Houston last week! On his official Facebook page, he posted an update, saying the new album is taking time, but it’s gonna be worth it. Real Piano, Real Harp, Real Violin, Real Cello, Real Drums, Real People, Real Songs, Real Music… He says “What turned out as an experiment with ‘One Thousand Wings’ is truly blossoming into something more organic and mature than we ever expected. We will be in touch in the near future with studio updates, pictures and videos so you can see what’s going on.”
Below is probably the most unique music group photo… India, US and UK altogether on one Skype call discussing the new album.
